Cataracts – Pasadena

In order for your eye to see clearly, it needs a clear, transparent lens to focus light onto the retina. With age, the lens might lose some of its transparency and can become cloudy. This is a condition called a cataract. When a cataract develops, the eye cannot see clearly because light is passing through a cloudy lens before reaching the retina. This results in blurry vision.

Symptoms

Cataracts progress rather slowly, with vision loss and other symptoms showing up gradually. Cataract symptoms are mild at first, but over time they can develop into blurred vision, excessive headlight glare, double vision, halos around lights, and vision issues while driving at night. Some people find that they need a much stronger light than normal in order to read, even with glasses. If you have any of these symptoms, it is probably time to visit us. Our vision center in Pasadena provides eye exams and care for patients with cataracts, and we also have intraocular replacement lense options for your eye surgery and treatments.

Causes and Risk Factors

Cataracts generally occur as the lens ages naturally, but the risk for developing them is increased by things like excessive sun or ultraviolet exposure and cigarette smoking. Other factors that increase the chances for developing cataracts include taking certain medications, a history of trauma to the eye, or if you have other illnesses such as diabetes.

How Are Cataracts Detected?

The best way to detect cataracts is a complete eye exam at our Pasadena vision center. If you have cataracts, changing your glasses can often temporarily improve your vision, but that will not work if the cataracts become too severe. To treat severe cataracts, we will surgically remove the cloudy lens and replace it with a clear, artificial one.

What is cataract surgery?

Removing cataracts today is a very safe and effective process. First, we’ll make an incision measuring only a few millimeters. Then we insert through this tiny incision a small instrument that breaks the cataract into small pieces. This technique comes with many benefits, including a faster recovery time, reduced need for glasses once the surgery is completed, and a lower risk of infection. The surgery requires no stitches. Our vision center in Pasadena offers eye exams and care to determine if you need cataract surgery.

Lens options: What type of lenses should you opt for in cataract surgery?

Cataract surgery involves the removal of your cloudy eye lens and replacing it with an artificial lens implant. Modern technology offers today’s patients two options for implants. You can either get a monofocal lens that will allow you to see only at one distance, or you can opt for a multifocal lens (also called a premium lens), which will allow you to see near, far, and at intermediate distances. We help determine which type of lens implant would work best for your vision during your cataract examination and consultation. Our premium lens implant options include the PanOptix lens, the Acrysof Restor, and the Tecnis Multifocal IOL. These multifocal lenses allow you to decide what type of vision you want to have after cataract removal.
