Canaloplasty
We successfully treat glaucoma with canaloplasty for our patients. Please make an appointment today to learn more about how we can help you or your loved ones.
What is Canaloplasty?
Canaloplasty is a relatively new non-penetrating surgery for the reduction of intraocular pressure in patients affected by glaucoma.
How is Canaloplasty Performed?
To perform canaloplasty, a tiny incision is made to gain access to schlemm’s canal, which is the eye’s natural drainage site. A microcatheter is introduced into the canal which circumnavigates the entire canal. A gel-like substance called viscoelastic is injected into the canal in order to clean out and enlarge schlemm’s canal and its smaller collector channels.
Can Canaloplasty Cure Glaucoma?
Glaucoma cannot be cured, but it can be controlled. Some glaucoma surgeries are more invasive with higher risks. On the other hand, canaloplasty lowers intraocular pressure with a much better safety profile by taking advantage of the eye’s natural drainage system.
What are the Benefits of Canaloplasty?
There are several benefits of canaloplasty. Offered at SoCal Vision Center in Glendale, this glaucoma surgery is less invasive, offering a quicker recovery for patients. There is less risk of complications when compared to traditional glaucoma surgery and patients are more likely to lessen their dependence on expensive medications. By restoring a percentage of the eye’s natural drainage system, risks are minimized, and results are maximized.
