Cataracts Montrose
For the eye to see clearly, light must be passed through a transparent lens and focused on the retina. When the lens becomes cloudy, the light’s path to the retina is partially obscured, producing cloudy vision. This is what is called a cataract. Cataracts are common with age but can also be brought about by other factors.
Symptoms
Generally slow to develop, cataracts will at first produce relatively mild symptoms that can worsen over time. Blurred vision may begin and get worse, for example, and you may have problems driving at night. Double vision and halos around lights are also signs of cataracts. Some people with cataracts also notice that they need more light to read, even when wearing glasses. A comprehensive eye exam is the best way to determine whether you have developed cataracts. If you think you may have cataracts, our vision center in Montrose has the exams and eye care treatment options you need to begin the restoration of your eyesight.
Causes and Risk Factors
Cataracts tend to develop with age, but other factors increase the risk. Smoking cigarettes or excessive exposure to sunlight both increase the risk of cataract development, as do certain medications, past trauma to the eye, and chronic diseases such as diabetes. If any of these risk factors apply to you and you’ve been noticing problems with your vision, contact our SoCal Vision team in Montrose for an appointment or additional information on eye care and cataracts.
How Are Cataracts Detected?
Eye exams are the best way to detect cataracts. Treatment options range from changing your glasses prescription to surgically removing the cloudy lens, which is then replaced with an artificial one.
What Is Cataract Surgery?
Cataract removal today is done using modern surgical techniques and is both safe and effective. We first make an incision measuring a few millimeters, then insert a tiny instrument into the incision that smashes the cataract into small pieces. The cataract is removed and then a replacement lens can be attached. With this procedure you are able to recover more quickly and will likely not depend as much on glasses; you’ll also have a lower risk of infection than you would with other procedures, and this procedure does not require stitches. The friendly and expert physicians at our Montrose vision center will make sure you have all the knowledge you need to feel comfortable before, during, and after cataract surgery.
Lens options: What type of lens implants should you opt for at the time of cataract surgery?
Today, those undergoing cataract surgery have two options for artificial lenses: a monofocal lens allows you to see at only one distance, while a premium, or multifocal lens lets you see at three distances—near, intermediate, and far. The vision experts at our Montrose center will help you select the lens type that you will be most comfortable and happy with going forward. Our multifocal lens options include the PanOptix lens, the Acrysof Restor, and the Tecnis Multifocal IOL. These modern lenses allow many cataract patients the opportunity to choose what vision style is the best fit for them.
