Glaucoma
Glaucoma is often called the silent thief of sight because it has few or no symptoms. Glaucoma affects the optic nerve, the part of the eye that sends images and information to the brain. If it is not detected in time, glaucoma can cause optic nerve damage, which eventually results in blindness. Luckily, glaucoma is easily identified during a routine eye exam. Although treatment can stop it from progressing, glaucoma has no cure and vision loss cannot be reversed. Glaucoma, like all chronic diseases, must be monitored for life. If you suffer from glaucoma, our Burbank ophthalmologist can meet with you to discuss a treatment and/or surgery plan.
– Causes and Risk factors
In order to maintain its shape and function, the eye needs pressure inside of it. Glaucoma results from abnormal increases in this intraocular pressure. While everyone is at risk for developing glaucoma, there are some factors that may increase someone’s risk for the disease:
Anyone over the age of 60.
Family history of glaucoma.
African Americans, especially over the age of 40.
Additional risk factors include high intraocular pressure, abnormalities with the optic nerve, or an unusually thin cornea. All of these risk factors can be identified during a routine eye exam. If any of these risk factors apply to you, please call our Burbank ophthalmologist to schedule your exam!
– Symptoms
Glaucoma does not produce any symptoms initially. As it progresses, however, a person may notice issues with their side or peripheral vision. This is a sign that significant optic nerve damage has already occurred. These peripheral blind spots will slowly increase, and eventually, glaucoma will cause loss of center vision and, if left untreated, blindness.
Diagnosing the condition before the person loses any vision is the primary goal of glaucoma management. The best way to detect glaucoma remains a routine, thorough ophthalmic exam.
