Glaucoma

Glaucoma is a serious optic nerve disease that can be present without symptoms. The optic nerve sends the brain images and information. If it isn’t caught in time, glaucoma can damage the optic nerve and will later cause blindness. Fortunately, the best way to detect glaucoma is with a routine eye exam. Glaucoma still doesn’t have a cure, and those who lose vision with glaucoma lose it permanently. However, treatment can help stop glaucoma’s advance. Much like diabetes or other chronic diseases, glaucoma must be continuously monitored. If you have been diagnosed with glaucoma, our Flintridge ophthalmologist can help you plan out treatment options or surgery.

– Causes and Risk factors

Glaucoma is caused by unusual increases in intraocular pressure, the pressure that is needed for the eye to keep its shape. Everyone is at risk for developing glaucoma; however, there are some groups that carry additional risk for developing the disease:

  • Anyone over the age of 60.

  • Family history of glaucoma.

  • African Americans, especially over the age of 40.

Other risk factors include eye pressure that is unusually high, irregularities with the optic nerve, or a cornea that is too thin. A thorough eye exam can identify these risk factors. If you believe you may be at an increased risk for glaucoma, please call our Flintridge ophthalmologist to schedule your exam today!

– Symptoms

Glaucoma presents few to no symptoms at the beginning, but as it progresses, a person may develop peripheral vision issues. That signifies that there has already been some optic nerve damage. These side blind spots will gradually get bigger, until the center vision is affected, and glaucoma will eventually cause blindness if left untreated.

It is immensely important to identify glaucoma before symptoms develop. A routine, thorough eye exam remains the best way to catch glaucoma before symptoms set in.
