Glaucoma

Glaucoma is a deleterious disease of the optic nerve with few or no symptoms. The optic nerve is responsible for sending images and information to the brain. Glaucoma, if it is not identified in time, can cause damage to the optic nerve that eventually results in blindness. A routine eye exam is the best way to detect glaucoma. There is still no cure for glaucoma, and vision loss is permanent. However, glaucoma can be stopped from progressing with treatment. Glaucoma must be constantly checked up on, like all other chronic diseases. If you have glaucoma, our La Canada ophthalmologist can help you come up with a plan for treatment and/or surgery.

– Causes and Risk factors

The eye requires pressure to keep its shape and function. An abnormal increase in this intraocular pressure is what causes glaucoma. Although every person is at risk for glaucoma, there are some factors that create additional glaucoma risk:

  • Anyone over the age of 60.

  • Family history of glaucoma.

  • African Americans, especially over the age of 40.

Other risk factors include abnormally high eye pressure, optic nerve irregularities, or an atypically thin cornea. These risk factors can be spotted in a comprehensive eye exam. If you think you may be at a higher risk for glaucoma, please call our La Canada ophthalmologist to schedule an eye exam today!

– Symptoms

There are few to no symptoms for glaucoma at the outset, but as the disease progresses, a person may start to have problems with their peripheral vision. At this point, there has already been considerable optic nerve damage. Over time, these side blind spots will get bigger until center vision begins to be affected, and if left untreated, glaucoma will cause blindness.

Identifying glaucoma before symptoms occur is key. A routine, comprehensive eye exam remains the best way to find out if someone has glaucoma.
