Glaucoma

Glaucoma is a potentially severe disease of the optic nerve that does not initially show symptoms. The brain receives images and information from the optic nerve. If left undetected, glaucoma can cause damage to the optic nerve, impairing vision and eventually causing blindness. However, glaucoma can be detected during a regular eye exam. Although there is still no cure for glaucoma and vision loss is permanent, treatment can stop the advance of the disease. Glaucoma must be continually monitored, like other chronic conditions. If you have glaucoma, contact our La Crescenta ophthalmologist to go over treatment or surgery options.

– Causes and Risk factors

An atypical increase in eye pressure is what causes glaucoma. This pressure is called intraocular pressure, which the eye needs in order to maintain its shape. While anyone can develop glaucoma, there are some groups that have an elevated risk factor:

  • Anyone over the age of 60.

  • Family history of glaucoma.

  • African Americans, especially over the age of 40.

Other risk factors include unusually high intraocular pressure, optic nerve aberrations, or an irregularly thin cornea. These risk factors can be spotted during a routine eye exam. If you are at an elevated risk for glaucoma, schedule an exam with our La Crescenta ophthalmologist today!

– Symptoms

Glaucoma presents few to no symptoms at the beginning, but as it progresses, a person may develop peripheral vision issues. That signifies that there has already been some optic nerve damage. These side blind spots will gradually get bigger, until the center vision is affected, and glaucoma will eventually cause blindness if left untreated.

It is immensely important to identify glaucoma before symptoms develop. A routine, thorough eye exam remains the best way to catch glaucoma before symptoms set in.
