Glaucoma

Glaucoma is a ruinous optic nerve disease that does not show symptoms at first but can eventually cause blindness. The optic nerve is responsible for transmitting images and information to the brain; untreated glaucoma causes damage to the optic nerve, which can impair vision. The good news is that glaucoma can be identified in a routine eye exam. There is still no cure for glaucoma, and vision loss is irreversible, but treatment can stop the progression of glaucoma. Like other chronic diseases, glaucoma must be constantly checked up on, or it will get worse. If you have glaucoma, our Montrose ophthalmologist will be happy to develop a plan for treatment or surgery.

– Causes and Risk factors

Glaucoma is caused by an atypical elevation of the intraocular pressure—the pressure that helps the eye keep its shape and function. Everyone is at risk for glaucoma, but there are certain groups that have an increased risk for the disease:

  • Anyone over the age of 60.

  • Family history of glaucoma.

  • African Americans, especially over the age of 40.

Additional risk factors include optic nerve abnormalities, unusually high eye pressure, or an uncharacteristically thin cornea. All of these factors can be identified during a regular eye exam. If you have any of these glaucoma risk factors, please schedule an eye exam with our Montrose ophthalmologist!

– Symptoms

Glaucoma does not usually produce symptoms at the outset. As the disease progresses, however, a person may start having peripheral vision problems—a sign that optic nerve damage has already taken place. Over time, these peripheral blind spots will get bigger, until center vision starts to be affected. If it is not detected and adequately treated, glaucoma will eventually cause blindness.

Detecting glaucoma before symptoms are present is of utmost importance. A routine and comprehensive checkup is the best way to identify glaucoma before the onset of symptoms.
