Cataracts La Cañada

Clear vision is produced when light comes through the eye’s transparent lens and is focused onto the retina. With age, however, the lens can become cloudy, and the light’s journey to the retina is disrupted, which can cause blurry vision. This is called a cataract.

Symptoms

Cataracts are slow to develop and so symptoms are relatively mild at first, but vision loss will gradually occur. Symptoms are relatively mild to begin with, but as time passes, those with cataracts may notice an increase in blurred vision and start having problems driving at night. They may also have double vision or see halos around lights. Needing more light to read, even with glasses, is another sign that you may have developed cataracts. If any of these things apply to you, it might be a good time to get your eyes checked in a comprehensive exam. Our vision center near La Canada offers eye exams and eye care for cataract treatments, should you need it.

Causes and Risk Factors

Most cataracts develop naturally as the eye ages. There are, however, some other factors that increase your risk, such as smoking cigarettes or excessive exposure to the sun or UV light. Certain medications can also put you at an increased risk for cataracts, as will any past trauma to the eye, or if you have certain chronic diseases such as diabetes. If you have any of these risk factors, contact SoCal Vision in La Canada to learn more about options for cataract treatments.

How Are Cataracts Detected?

A comprehensive eye exam is the best way to find out whether you have cataracts. Sometimes, a change in your glasses prescription might alleviate your symptoms, but with more severe cataracts, the cloudy lens will need to be surgically removed and replaced with an artificial one.

What is Cataract Surgery?

Removing cataracts today is a safe and effective procedure using modern surgery techniques. It begins with a small incision measuring a few millimeters. We then insert into this incision a small instrument that breaks up the cataract into tiny fragments. Once the cataract is removed, an artificial lens is put on the eye to correct vision. This surgical technique makes for a quicker recovery with a lower risk of infection. Often, the patient will not need glasses after this surgery as well. The surgery requires no stitches. At our La Canada vision center, we make sure you know everything you need to feel comfortable before, during, and after a cataract removal procedure.

Lens options: What type of lens implants should you opt for at the time of cataract surgery?

Today’s cataract surgery patients have two options for lens implants: a monofocal lens, with which you can see at one distance (near or far), or a premium multifocal lens that allows you to see at near, far, and intermediate distances. Our physicians and staff at our La Canada vision center will guide you in selecting the type of lens that will work best for you. We offer a number of multifocal lenses, including the PanOptix lens, the Acrysof Restor, and the Tecnis Multifocal IOL. With these modern lenses, you have several options to choose from when it comes to your post-cataract removal vision.
